Focal Theme
Focal Theme: Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration.
The theme “Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration” is very close to home for Kerala, a state shaped by its long coastline, rich marine life, and vibrant fishing and maritime economy. Holding the 38th Kerala Science Congress in Kochi makes this even more meaningful, as the city is home to top marine research centers like CMFRI, CIFT, KFUOS, NIO (Regional Centre), and CUSAT, which contribute significantly to ocean science and innovation.
The Blue Economy is about using the ocean’s resources responsibly—supporting livelihoods, boosting the economy, and protecting the environment at the same time. For Kerala, this means sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism, renewable energy, and marine biotechnology. But our oceans also face challenges: pollution, erosion, and climate change threaten delicate ecosystems like mangroves, coral reefs, and estuaries.
This theme invites scientists, policymakers, industries, and communities to work together to restore and protect our oceans while building sustainable economic opportunities. By combining research, technology, and local participation, Kerala can set an example for a resilient Blue Economy. After all, a healthy ocean is essential—not just for the state, but for the planet.
