Prof. Valsamma Joseph is currently the Director of the National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Cochin University of Science and Technology, with earlier degrees in Environmental Studies and Botany. Her research expertise spans marine algal biotechnology, aquaculture health management, algal genomics, marine microbiology, and biogeochemical cycling in aquatic ecosystems. She has made significant contributions to applied research in biofuels, aquatic animal nutrition and the control of microbial pathogens in aquaculture; algal genomics; cell and developmental biology of marine macroalgae; aquatic environment health management; and understanding the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems through metagenomic approaches.She has been a recipient of several prestigious fellowships and recognitions, including the Raman Postdoctoral Fellowship for research at the University of California, San Diego. She has played key leadership roles as Chairperson of the Board of Studies in Marine Biotechnology and as Coordinator of multiple national and state-level research initiatives. She also actively contributes to academic governance and scientific advisory bodies at national and institutional levels.
